Thursday, October 15 is the ordinary deadline to file a 2025 federal individual income tax return if you requested the six-month extension. The IRS confirms the 2026 date. An extension gave extra filing time; it did not move the usual April payment deadline.

Before working against that cutoff, check whether a different rule actually applies. The IRS extension page links to disaster relief and special situations, including military service. State returns have their own rules. Check your state’s deadline separately.

A final filing record

Final copy of the returnThe information you submitted
Electronic acceptance noticeWhether the filing system accepted the submission
Payment confirmationThe amount, date and tax period attached to a payment
Applicable relief noticeWhy a different deadline may apply

If someone prepares the return, agree who will monitor the acknowledgment. Uploading documents to a preparer and transmitting a return to the IRS are different steps. Ask for the completed return and its status rather than relying on an appointment confirmation or a file named final.

Check names, identification numbers, bank information and the tax year before submission. If software shows a rejection, read its stated reason and follow the applicable correction instructions. Keep that message with the filing record so the preparer can see what happened.

For an unpaid balance, use the IRS website to review payment options or contact a qualified tax professional. Do not wait for a marketing email promising another ordinary six-month extension. Put the federal filing confirmation, any state confirmation and payment records in the same folder, with separate filenames that identify which obligation each document covers.
