Apple sold $57.6 billion worth of iPhones in the July-to-September quarter, up 17% from a year earlier, and it did that before its new iPhone Duo reached stores. The company reported Monday afternoon that total revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter rose 12% to $114.5 billion, a record for a September quarter, and that services such as the App Store, iCloud and Apple Music brought in an all-time high of $31.6 billion.

Profit rose too. Net income was $30.7 billion, or $2.10 a share, up from $27.5 billion and $1.85 a year earlier. Apple says about 5 cents of that per-share figure, and roughly 1 percentage point of its 47.9% gross margin, came from tariff refunds.

By region, sales in Greater China grew 21% to $17.5 billion, and Japan was the only one to slip, down about 1%.

The quarter ended Sept. 26. The iPhone Duo arrived at Apple Stores on Oct. 23, so its first weeks of sales will land in the holiday quarter. Chief executive John Ternus called it "the most transformational iPhone since the original" and pointed to the iPhone 18 Pro models, new home hardware and the Siri AI update as the lineup heading into the holidays.

For the full fiscal year, revenue climbed 15% to $478.8 billion and net income reached $132.2 billion. Research and development spending grew faster than sales, rising 32% to $45.8 billion for the year.

Inventory more than doubled over the 12 months, to $14.5 billion at the end of September from $5.7 billion, according to the balance sheet attached to the release. The release doesn't say why.

It also gives no revenue forecast for the December quarter. Apple scheduled its conference call on the results for 2 p.m. Pacific.

Shareholders will get a quarterly dividend of 27 cents a share, payable Nov. 16 to owners of record at the close on Nov. 12. Chief financial officer Kevan Parekh said Apple returned $28 billion to shareholders during the quarter.
