SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of arrives on Netflix on October 30, with older seasons of the comedy series already available on the service.

Netflix’s October 7 announcement identifies Jason Hehir as the documentary’s director and says the film includes clips selected with input from the cast. Its introduction to the slate names Eugene Levy among the original show’s performers.

The sketches and the people who made them

The cast’s involvement gives the film a particular perspective on what survives from the series. Performers may remember the work behind a scene, a difficult character or a moment that became a favorite. A viewer encountering the same sketch for the first time gets the finished joke, without that production history.

The older episodes offer room for both experiences. A full sketch preserves its setup, repetitions and pauses; a documentary excerpt necessarily selects part of that sequence. Watching the series can therefore provide something different from hearing its makers explain why they chose a clip.

For someone new to SCTV, an original episode is an available introduction before the documentary arrives. Familiar viewers can go straight to the film for its account of the show’s history and the cast’s choices.

Netflix’s October release calendar lists the documentary for October 30. The earlier series has its own listing on the service.
