Democrats took four governor's offices from Republicans on Tuesday, in Georgia, Texas, Ohio and Iowa, as 36 states voted for governor. Republicans kept Florida and South Carolina, and Vermont reelected its Republican governor.
Some of the closest races were still being counted late Tuesday night.

Firsts on the ballot

With Bottoms and Donalds joining Maryland's Moore, at least three Black governors will serve at the same time for the first time, according to the same Stateline report. Before Moore, the only Black governors ever elected were Deval Patrick of Massachusetts and L. Douglas Wilder of Virginia.
Haaland, a former U.S. interior secretary and an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, makes New Mexico the second state led by a Native American governor, after Oklahoma, where Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt is a member of the Cherokee Nation.
In Pennsylvania, Shapiro's win was confirmed when Garrity conceded. In South Carolina, Wilson declared victory and Johnson conceded. Scott's sixth term in Vermont is a record for the state, and Pingree's win was reported by the Maine Morning Star.
Democrats also won a Senate majority on Tuesday, taking seven Republican-held seats.
