Thunderstorms prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to hold some flights headed for New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday and meter arrivals into Newark and Boston. The FAA's live airspace board showed the JFK ground stop scheduled through 2:30 p.m. Eastern as of 1:43 p.m. Eastern. The FAA can extend or lift a stop as conditions change.
The stop applies to affected inbound flights before they take off from their origin airports. Check your airline for your flight's status, even if the weather is clear where you're departing. A listed end time is the FAA's schedule for the restriction. Airlines may still need time to move aircraft and crews after it lifts.
At the same snapshot, the FAA reported average arrival delays of 149 minutes at Newark Liberty and 144 minutes at Boston Logan under separate thunderstorm delay programs. The agency scheduled those programs through 11:59 p.m. Eastern at Newark and 11:29 p.m. Eastern at Boston. Those are airport program averages, so the actual delay varies by flight.
The FAA's Friday air traffic outlook also flagged thunderstorms and low clouds around LaGuardia, Philadelphia and the Washington, D.C., area. If you're connecting through one of the affected airports, check both legs in the airline's app. The status of the first flight alone may miss a change to the connection.
