ChromeOS 156 has reached the Stable channel, with operating system version 16836.19.0 and browser version 156.0.8078.42 in Google's October 20 release notice.

The release applies to Stable-channel devices. The installed version remains visible in the Chromebook's update screen; a different number in a Dev-channel announcement describes a separate release track.

The Stable release announcement lists browser and third-party security fixes. A separate October 21 Dev-channel post describes ChromeOS 16852.6.0 with browser 157.0.8103.7. The higher number does not make Dev the appropriate update choice for a computer you rely on daily.

Google's Chromebook update instructions explain how to check in Settings under About ChromeOS. Connected Chromebooks automatically check for and download updates, though a restart may be needed to finish installation. Save work before restarting, then confirm the installed version in the same screen.

On a school or employer's Chromebook, an administrator may manage the version and update schedule. If the expected release is absent, send the administrator the model, installed version and any error message or pending-restart status before changing channels. Support and release availability depend on the device, so a higher browser number on another laptop does not by itself indicate a fault.
