The Smithsonian American Art Museum will bring 225 photographs together in Much Here Is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial, opening September 18.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum announced the exhibition on September 15, 2026. The galleries open September 18, three days after the announcement.

The project brought together 225 photographs and connected the Bicentennial work with a longer history of federally supported photographic surveys. The museum explains that a National Endowment for the Arts program funded 72 surveys across six years. Its scale makes the exhibition appealing to readers interested in regional history, documentary photography or what a nation chooses to preserve about itself.

Seventy-two surveys, 225 photographs

A survey is shaped by the subjects and places its photographers choose. Streets, workplaces and domestic spaces can produce very different accounts of the same country. Selecting 225 photographs from the wider projects adds another editorial decision to that history.

Seventy-two funded surveys over six years averages twelve a year, although the announcement does not say the awards were distributed evenly. That scale is a reason to distinguish a government-supported survey program from a single photographer's national portrait. The 225 exhibited photographs are a further selection from those projects.

The museum's exhibition page lists the run through April 18, 2027, with free admission and daily opening from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. That later closing makes it a candidate for an afternoon after another daytime commitment. Visitors interested in buying the companion catalog can inspect the exhibition first, then decide whether they want to continue studying the images in a book.
