Axon said November 5 it will invest an additional $1.2 billion in Skydio and become the drone maker’s exclusive distributor for public safety in the United States and Canada. For police and other agencies that want Skydio equipment for emergency response, the distribution agreement puts Axon in charge of that sales channel. Local agencies still decide whether to buy the drones and under what rules to use them.

The deal expands an existing partnership between the companies. Axon, which sells body cameras, Tasers and evidence software, already offers Skydio drones through Axon Air. The agreement covers public safety in two countries. Skydio also serves other markets, and the announcement leaves those outside the scope of the exclusive arrangement.

Axon says the number of Skydio docking stations deployed through Axon Air more than doubled from a year earlier. The company’s earnings release did not give the total in that comparison. The figure counts installed docks through Axon’s offering and gives no measure of how many emergency calls those drones handled.

Axon expects its stake to reach approximately 37% on a fully diluted basis after the transactions. The company announcement describes a mix of cash and Axon stock. Part of the money goes into Skydio itself, and part buys shares from existing holders. Those are different uses of the investment. Only the capital paid to Skydio goes onto the drone maker’s balance sheet for its own use.

The November 5 filing describes a staged purchase. An initial transaction closed November 5, with remaining transactions expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, subject to closing conditions. The expected 37% stake describes where Axon expects to end up if the remaining steps close. The distribution agreement is a separate part of the announcement. The $5.2 billion valuation in the company release describes Skydio before the investment.

What a first responder drone does

A drone used as a first responder can fly to a call and send video to officers before they get there. That is the model described by the Chula Vista Police Department, which has operated a program in Southern California since 2018. The footage can give responders an overhead view of a scene while they are still en route. The city also publishes information about drone flights, giving residents a way to see where the department operates the aircraft.

Chula Vista says its policy generally restricts intentional recording in places where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy, with exceptions for warrants or emergencies. That is one department’s policy. A city considering a program can decide when a drone may be launched, who may view video and how long the department keeps footage. Residents following a proposed purchase can look for those details in the agency’s written policy and the local contract. The Axon distribution agreement establishes a sales channel. It does not set the recording or retention rules for a department.

Why Axon lowered its revenue forecast

Axon also reported $909 million in third-quarter revenue, up 28% from a year earlier. Its earnings release put its full-year revenue outlook at $3.61 billion to $3.63 billion, or about 30% growth. Its previous forecast called for 32% to 34% growth.

Axon attributed that change to roughly $130 million it had expected to recognize from three federal Dedrone deployments. About $30 million had been expected in the third quarter and $100 million across two deployments in the fourth. The revised outlook excludes all three from 2026 revenue. That disclosure concerns the timing of revenue in Axon’s forecast. The company’s filing on the separate Skydio investment gives the closing timetable for that deal.
