Airbnb’s new limits on checkout chores cover reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026. The booking date controls whether the policy applies to a holiday stay.

The company announced the changes on October 20. The Associated Press reported that checkout chores have repeatedly frustrated travelers who are also paying cleaning fees. The changes address those expectations while leaving guests responsible for damage and unusually dirty conditions.

Which reservations are covered

Airbnb’s house rules and requests policy covers reservations booked on or after November 20, regardless of when guests arrive or leave.

A November 19 booking for Thanksgiving falls before that threshold; a November 20 booking falls within it. The wording does not establish whether modifying an older reservation creates a new booking. Do not assume changing travel dates changes the applicable policy.

A host’s December calendar may therefore contain reservations from different policy periods.

What hosts can reasonably request

Airbnb's host announcement gives concrete comparisons:

  • Dishes can go in the sink; washing and putting them away generally is not an acceptable request.
  • Gathering used towels is allowed; stripping beds or starting laundry generally is not.
  • Trash and recycling can be sorted into designated indoor bins. Taking garbage off-site generally is not an acceptable task.
  • Hosts can ask guests to turn air conditioning off when leaving. They should not restrict an amenity advertised as available during the stay.

Exceptions depend on the property and local conditions. Airbnb cites animal-proof trash containers in bear country and shower limits during local drought restrictions. An outdoor garbage request or water-use limit can therefore be permitted when those local circumstances justify it.

Cleaning fees and damage are different

Airbnb's separate ground rules for guests explain that a cleaning fee covers ordinary turnover, including laundry and vacuuming. Hosts may not charge a fee simply because a guest skipped a particular cleaning or checkout task.

Guests still must leave the property without conditions requiring excessive or deep cleaning. Airbnb lists moldy dishes, soiled carpets and pet stains as examples. Hosts can leave cleanliness ratings and reviews, and guests remain responsible for reasonable reimbursement requests when they caused damage, missing items or unexpected cleaning costs.

Paying a cleaning fee therefore does not buy permission to leave substantial mess or damage. Equally, a request to pay because sheets were not stripped is different from a documented claim for damage. The reason for the charge determines which obligation applies.

Checkout times also remain in force. Guests must return keys and remove their belongings by the reservation's checkout time unless the host approves another arrangement.

Where requests must appear

For covered bookings, rules and requests must be disclosed in the listing's designated section when the reservation is made. New demands delivered afterward through a message, a sign inside the home or an in-person instruction do not meet that disclosure requirement.

Airbnb distinguishes house rules, which guests must follow, from requests, which guests are encouraged to respect. Its listing guidance includes guest limits, quiet hours, pets, smoking and locking up among the house-rule categories.

That guidance also says later edits to a listing’s rules or requests apply only to future reservations, not pending or confirmed ones. Guests can find the recorded expectations in booking terms, automated emails and the reservation details in Trips. For someone comparing holiday rentals, those records help identify what was disclosed before booking and what was added later.

Hosts can review requests in Listing editor under House rules and requests, choosing During the stay or Before checkout. Airbnb flags text that may violate its policies and offers hosts a chance to provide relevant details for review.

Airbnb can require listing corrections, issue warnings or flag persistent violations. The policy promises no automatic refund or penalty-free cancellation for disputed requests. It directs people to report violations to Airbnb.
