Bodum is recalling 5.9 million French press coffee makers in the United States after identifying 70 reports of glass carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns. Owners should immediately stop stirring coffee with metal utensils and avoid using cracked or damaged carafes.
The October 29 recall notice covers 8-cup and 12-cup presses with replaceable glass carafes in eight model lines: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya.
Check the size and model
The presses were sold from 1974 through October 2026 for about $15 to $65, including at Target, Walmart, coffee and home goods stores, and through online retailers. An older purchase can therefore fall within the recall's sales period.
The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most affected models, and on the glass alongside product warnings. CPSC's notice includes photographs of several models and the identifying text on a carafe.
What the remedy includes
In its statement announcing the recall, Bodum says affected US consumers can receive a free plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label. The company says metal utensils can damage the glass and lead to breakage during use. New sales will include the spoon and label, according to Bodum.
Daily Coffee News reports that the announced remedy does not include refunds or replacement coffee makers.
Contact Bodum at 888-879-8213, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, or email [email protected]. The CPSC notice also links to the dedicated recall website.
This action is separate from the May 2019 Starbucks recall of Bodum + Starbucks recycled coffee presses. That notice concerned a plunger knob that could break and expose a metal rod, creating a laceration hazard. It listed a store-credit refund through Starbucks; today's Bodum notice lists a spoon-and-label repair.
