Nick Cave's Mammoth makes a museum visit out of sculpture, moving images and familiar objects placed in unfamiliar relationships. The Smithsonian American Art Museum's installation draws on the artist's family history in rural Missouri and his relationship with the landscape there. That gives the work a human point of entry even when its mammoths seem fantastical.
The exhibition runs from February 13, 2026, through January 3, 2027. Its October 24 afternoon and evening performances had separate registration, and the official page marked both as sold out, with a waitlist. Free admission to the museum was not a reservation for a performance.
The installation is its own visit
The Smithsonian's announcement describes an environment combining sculpture, video and found objects. Tools and other everyday items sit within a work shaped by memory, family and the natural world.
This suits a visitor who enjoys contemporary art that makes associations across objects and media. It can also work for someone who finds a single abstract canvas difficult to approach but enjoys looking closely at made things.

Mammoth is at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington. Use the exhibition's location information when planning the journey, especially because the institution also operates the Renwick Gallery at a different address.
Exhibition or performance
| Plan | Published arrangement |
|---|---|
| See the installation | Free museum admission; exhibition through January 3, 2027 |
| Attend October 24 performance | Separate registration; both sessions listed sold out |
The two October 24 performances are listed at 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Their waitlists concern those sessions, while the installation remains scheduled through January 3. That separates an immediate booking problem from a museum visit that can take place on another day.
A Smithsonian Magazine account of the work identifies family possessions among the transformed found objects. The museum names his grandmother's thimble collection and describes hundreds of items on a large light table. Those small domestic tools offer a different scale from the mammoth forms. The small domestic tools bring memories of labor and use into an installation whose mammoth forms dominate the room.
If a performance is your main interest, read the current registration status before setting out. If the installation is the attraction, allow time to look at the small objects as well as the large forms.
