Forgotten Island sends two longtime friends into a world where getting home could cost them their memories of each other. DreamWorks' animated adventure is now available for paid home viewing in the US, giving families a new Halloween-week option with a substantial dose of monster scares.

The digital release began October 27. Universal's October 20 announcement sets December 1 for 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. An exact subscription-streaming date remains unannounced; forecasts about Peacock or Netflix are not release commitments.

Rent now, buy or wait

The live Prime Video listing showed a $19.99 UHD rental and $29.99 UHD purchase when checked October 27. Its viewing-options panel gives renters 30 days to begin and 48 hours to finish once playback starts. The purchase option includes extras.

At those prices, buying costs $10 more than one rental. Two separate rentals at the same price would total $39.98, or $9.99 more than buying once. That comparison concerns separate rental windows, not two viewings within an already active rental. Prices can change, and another retailer's offer may differ.

Digital buying also has its own limits. Universal's home-release page describes a purchase as a limited license to access the content, subject to the retailer's terms. It should not be treated as identical to possessing a disc.

The friendship behind the creatures

In DreamWorks' synopsis, high school graduates Jo and Raissa face separate futures after years as best friends. H.E.R. voices Jo, while Liza Soberano voices Raissa. A portal carries them to Nakali, where creatures come from stories told by their Filipino families.

Dave Franco plays the weredog Raww, and Lea Salonga voices the feared Manananggal. The threat to the girls' shared memories makes their impending separation part of the adventure itself. The film is written and directed by Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado, with Mark Swift producing, the filmmaking team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Common Sense Media's Tara McNamara describes a fast-moving fantasy set in the 1990s Philippines. Her review identifies Filipino food, language, beliefs and folklore throughout the film, alongside the idea of kapwa, or interconnectedness. That cultural setting gives the friendship story a specific world beyond its portal-adventure premise.

PG still includes frightening scenes

Universal also has an official home-release trailer available online.

The US rating is PG for scary animated action, language, rude humor, thematic elements, some violence and brief tobacco imagery. Common Sense Media recommends age 8 and older, but its review describes a particularly frightening winged creature whose body separates at the waist, as well as crude bodily humor.

Children and Media Australia, reviewing the Australian release, takes a more cautious position: unsuitable under 9, with parental guidance for ages 9 to 11. It flags repeated pursuit, threatening transformations and themes of loss and separation. These are reviewers' judgments, not a guarantee about an individual child's response, and the Australian assessment is not a US classification.

Runtime, access features and extras

Apple's US listing gives a runtime of 1 hour 49 minutes, close to Universal's disc specifications of 108 minutes 45 seconds. Universal's separate product page currently says 1 hour 39 minutes, a conflicting listing; allow about 1 hour 49 minutes based on Apple and the disc specifications.

Apple lists English audio description and closed captions, plus French Canadian and Latin American Spanish language options. Prime Video displays a flashing-lights and strobing warning.

Universal lists bonus material at participating retailers, including filmmaking and Filipino-culture featurettes, creature-design material and directors' commentary. Check the edition's included extras when comparing a digital purchase with the December disc release.
