Waymo is widening its driverless ride-hailing service in five cities where it already operates, adding nearly 250 square miles of territory over the next week across Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company gave one combined figure rather than a breakdown by city.

None of the five is a new market. The change brings neighborhoods that sat outside each city's service area into the map.

San Diego's map nearly doubles

Waymo's San Diego service is less than two months old. At its public debut on September 1, the zone covered about 50 square miles, stretching from Logan Heights to Pacific Beach and from Sunset Cliffs to Normal Heights. Adding La Jolla, University City and Clairemont brings it to about 90 square miles, NBC 7 San Diego reported, based on a map Waymo shared.

Access has widened along with the map. San Diego's first riders were let in by rolling invitation, and since October 14 anyone with the Waymo app can request a ride there, according to the same report.

When the new boundaries take effect

Waymo says the additions arrive over the course of the next week. The Waymo app shows each city's current boundary, and the company's service area page links to the maps for every market.
