National Weather Service alerts issued Sunday cover parts of Alaska's Dalton Highway through 10 p.m. Alaska daylight time Monday, October 26.
A winter storm warning for the south slopes of the central Brooks Range calls for 8 to 16 inches of snow and gusts up to 35 mph. It includes Coldfoot, Wiseman and highway mileposts 165 to 232. Heavier snow returns Monday morning, with another 4 to 8 inches through the evening.
The central Brooks Range advisory covers Atigun Pass, Galbraith Lake, Anaktuvuk Pass and mileposts 232 to 322. It forecasts 3 to 6 inches of snow and gusts up to 55 mph. Blowing snow could reduce visibility below half a mile, and below a quarter mile at times. NWS warns of difficult travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities describes the route as a remote highway with extremely limited services and predominantly commercial traffic. Heavy snowdrifts can become impassable even for large trucks. The department recommends a reliable vehicle equipped for remote conditions, with extra fuel, warm clothing and emergency supplies.
NWS advises caution and carrying a flashlight, food and water if travel is necessary. Check road conditions at Alaska 511 or call 511 before setting out.
