Flash flooding is already occurring around Farmington, Bloomfield, Aztec and Kirtland in San Juan County, New Mexico, the National Weather Service said Sunday. Warnings for northeastern and north-central parts of the county run until 8:30 p.m. MST, or 7:30 p.m. Pacific.

In its 12:34 p.m. MST warning, the agency said emergency managers reported washout damage along Highway 170 between mile markers 3 and 18. Check NMRoads for current road information before traveling.

A separate 1:46 p.m. MST warning reported washed-out roads and water over roads in northeastern San Juan County. It includes Farmington, Bloomfield, Aztec, Kirtland, Fruitland and nearby communities. Highway segments in the warning include US 64 from mile markers 32 to 82 and 85 to 86, and US 550 from 151 to 160, 163 to 165 and near 167.

San Juan County Emergency Management warned that the Animas, La Plata and San Juan rivers could overflow their banks this evening, flooding places already hit and possibly additional areas. Its alert identifies a shelter at McGee Park and urges residents to prepare essential supplies.

The governor’s flood-resource page places McGee Park on Road 5568 between Farmington and Bloomfield. It directs people in immediate danger to call 911 and lists 2-1-1 for shelter placement and other nonemergency help.

The warnings come during another round of rain across an already soaked Southwest. AP reported that regional flood watches also cover western New Mexico.

Do not enter flowing water or water of unknown depth, the weather service advises.
