Apple says it will replace iPhone Duo units affected by an inner-display problem, after owners reported cracks along the folding screen’s center line over the weekend.

In an October 26 statement to 9to5Mac, the company acknowledged an issue affecting a small number of devices and directed owners with display problems to AppleCare for a replacement. Apple did not give a failure rate or confirm a technical cause in that statement.

9to5Mac reports that AppleCare+ coverage is not required for replacement under this response. People who bought through a carrier should also contact AppleCare directly.

What the teardown can explain

iFixit’s October 25 teardown examined the hinge using disassembly, CT scans and a 3D model. Its analysis identified a possible stress point near the center support, where the way the thin display is supported changes as it bends.

In one closing simulation, a support bar failed to move down far enough, allowing the folded screen to press against it. That is a proposed explanation for the reported damage, not Apple’s confirmed diagnosis or a measurement of how many phones could fail.

For an affected owner, the next step is a support assessment. Apple’s screen-service page offers a route to arrange repair or replacement, with in-person and mail service options. Availability depends on location and parts.

Apple’s general warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year and excludes accidental damage. Owners should identify the inner-display problem when contacting support so Apple can assess it under the response announced October 26. The company’s statement does not set a replacement turnaround time.
