Drivers have through Saturday, October 31 to use most Yellowstone National Park roads before seasonal closures begin November 1. The West, South and East entrances close to regular vehicles, while the northern road between Gardiner and Cooke City remains the winter driving route, weather permitting.

The National Park Service announced the schedule October 21. This is a planning deadline for a late-fall trip. Wyoming Public Media’s October 27 report also confirms the transition to winter operations. A November visit and a December snowcoach trip offer different access.

The dates come from the park’s road schedule. December 15 does not reopen the interior to ordinary cars. Winter access uses a different kind of transportation, and road opening dates can change with weather.

What a northern-route visit allows

The route runs from the North Entrance at Gardiner through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City/Silver Gate. It keeps a northern Yellowstone trip possible after the rest of the regular road network closes.

Do not treat an open Northeast Entrance as proof of a winter through-route to Red Lodge or Cody. NPS lists Beartooth Highway as closed for the season. Farther east, the winter road closure between Cooke City and Pilot Creek also interrupts access by wheeled vehicles. Check the Montana and Wyoming road links on the park’s roads page when planning the approach, not only the Yellowstone entrance itself.

Dunraven Pass needs a date check too. The older projected road table lists October 12, with a possible extension. The newer October 21 announcement says Tower Fall to Canyon Junction will remain open through October 31, weather permitting. Neither date guarantees that snow will leave the pass usable on your travel day.

Open roads do not mean full services

Yellowstone’s facility operating dates show how much has already closed before the road deadline. Canyon Lodge’s listed summer lodging season ended October 24. Old Faithful Inn lodging ended October 11, and Old Faithful Snow Lodge’s summer lodging ended October 24.

Some day-visit facilities run longer. The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center and Geyser Grill list October 31 as their final fall day. A day drive before the closure therefore should not be planned around finding a room at Old Faithful that night.

Mammoth has a different pattern. NPS lists the Albright Visitor Center, Mammoth Park Store and Mammoth Campground as open year-round. The general store also operates year-round, with holiday closures. Facility dates can change, and operating dates do not establish daily hours or room availability. Check the specific stop rather than assuming the summer service network is still functioning.

Match lodging to winter transportation

Yellowstone National Park Lodges’ current schedule says Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel stays open through the fall into winter. It is the park’s hotel accessible by personal vehicle in winter. Its availability does not mean the roads south toward Norris and Old Faithful stay open to cars.

Old Faithful Snow Lodge is scheduled to reopen December 16, one day after the planned start of oversnow travel. The operator says commercial oversnow transportation is required for guests heading there. Arrange the transfer along with the room; a lodging reservation does not create a driving route.

The operator’s winter Bozeman airport shuttle is available only to guests of Yellowstone National Park Lodges and must be reserved. It serves Mammoth, so travelers staying at Old Faithful still need to account for the interior journey. Check transport dates, connections and availability before committing to flights.

Conditions can change before the calendar does

NPS’s winter visitor guidance warns of snow and ice on the northern road and slippery boardwalks around thermal areas. Use pullouts rather than stopping or standing in the roadway. Wildlife has the right of way; slow down or wait for animals to move off the road.

For road updates, call 307-344-2117 or text 82190 to 888-777 to subscribe to Yellowstone alerts. The park recommends a full gas tank, blankets and other cold-weather essentials, plus flexible travel plans in case conditions close a road before its scheduled seasonal cutoff.
