Two blindfolds and a microphone from Good Mythical Morning go on view at the National Museum of American History on October 22. The Smithsonian’s October calendar places them outside Entertainment Nation, on the third floor’s west side.
The museum collected the objects in 2024 from Rhett James McLaughlin and Charles Lincoln Neal III, better known as Rhett and Link. The display gives fans a chance to see equipment from a show built around the two hosts sitting together, talking and taking on challenges.
A fan-made prop became part of the show
The blindfolds are familiar to viewers of the hosts’ taste tests. With their eyes covered, Rhett and Link have to identify food by taste, leaving their reactions and guesses to carry the segment.
The Smithsonian’s catalog record for Link’s blindfold adds a detail that the opening announcement leaves out: a fan named Megan Wolfe made the blindfolds and sent them to the hosts. They first used them on September 11, 2014, in season six, episode 43.
Link’s version has a green cotton base, felt eyeglasses and shaggy brown fleece on the back. It is a handmade object that became recognizable through repeated use on screen. That history connects a viewer’s contribution to the production itself, alongside the microphone used at the hosts’ table.
YouTube alongside older entertainment
The nearby Entertainment Nation exhibition covers theater, music, sports, movies and television. These objects extend that subject into an online variety show, where a recurring desk setup and props can become as familiar to viewers as a television set.
A blindfold in a case cannot reproduce the timing of a taste-test joke. It can preserve the thing the performers actually wore, including the materials and construction that are easy to miss in a video. The microphone and blindfolds connect the finished episodes with the physical work of making them.
For a visit, the location to save is Third Floor, West, outside Entertainment Nation. The October opening concerns the display; the objects have been in the museum’s collection since 2024.
