Apple says optimized iPhone Duo apps will carry a Made for iPhone Duo badge on their App Store pages, with new collections appearing Friday, October 23.

The October 22 developer showcase names entertainment, work and creative apps that arrange information around the folding display. It also distinguishes features available at the opening from updates still on the way.

The timetable leaves some advertised layouts unavailable at the phone's opening. Buyers choosing it for a particular app need the release date for that app.

Separate the examples by timing

Apple describes layouts such as video above supporting information on a partially folded screen, and calendars or editing controls beside the main content on the open display. The layouts depend on app-specific support.

The badge and release notes on an app's current App Store page identify its available support. A showcase screenshot can demonstrate an intended layout while the necessary update is still pending.

Apple's manual app-update instructions provide a way to check the installed software: open the App Store, tap the account picture, then App Updates. An available Update button establishes that a new version can be installed. It does not establish that a feature described as arriving in the coming weeks is included in that version. Read its release notes as well.

Also check the service behind the app. A new layout does not establish that a subscription, movie, live sports event or other paid content is included with the phone.

A store demonstration can help buyers judge control size and partially folded views. The timing remains decisive for anyone buying the phone to use a specific app layout: an announced feature may arrive after the device.
