The next mainline Elder Scrolls game finally has a name: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Xbox published the title Tuesday in a short official name reveal on its news site, the same day it marked 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios, the Maryland studio behind Skyrim and Fallout.

Xbox showed a name and a logo. Neither post gives a release date, platforms or a price, and no gameplay was shown.

What Bethesda has said so far

Bethesda first teased The Elder Scrolls VI with a brief title card at E3 in June 2018. More than eight years later, the game's official page at elderscrolls.bethesda.net still describes it as "currently in pre-production at Bethesda Game Studios" and calls it "the highly-anticipated next chapter in the iconic The Elder Scrolls series." That page had not been updated with the new name on Tuesday morning.

Sentinel is also the name of a city in Hammerfell, a desert province in the series' fictional world of Tamriel. Bethesda has not said where the game is set.

Fifteen years since Skyrim

The last numbered entry, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, came out in November 2011. It is still selling: the series site now promotes a Nintendo Switch 2 edition. Bethesda Game Studios has shipped Fallout 76 and Starfield in between. Microsoft bought Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, in 2021, so the new game will come from an Xbox-owned studio.
