The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for West Melbourne and Palm Bay, Florida, on Monday, November 2, and directed people to seek higher ground immediately. The warning runs until 11:45 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, or 8:45 a.m. Pacific.
The 9:34 a.m. EST extension describes a particularly dangerous situation and a catastrophic damage threat. Radar and automated gauges indicated 12 to 15 inches of rain, with another 3 to 5 inches possible in the warned area.
NWS says people should avoid travel unless fleeing an area subject to flooding or following an evacuation order. Low-water crossings, creeks, streets and underpasses can flood. Do not drive across flooded roads.
The southeastern Brevard County warning includes Palm Bay, Melbourne, West Melbourne, Malabar, Indialantic, Melbourne Beach, Grant-Valkaria, Micco and Melbourne Airport.
A separate flood warning covers other parts of Brevard County until noon EST, or 9 a.m. Pacific. Issued at 9:29 a.m. EST, it includes Titusville, Cocoa, Cape Canaveral, Port Canaveral, Merritt Island and Rockledge. That bulletin reports 4 to 8 inches of rain, with another 2 to 4 inches possible.
FOX 35 meteorologist T.J. Springer had forecast repeated downpours from the Orlando area toward the Space Coast in his Sunday report. His forecast described street-flooding risks in low spots and areas with poor drainage, with wet weather continuing into Monday morning.
