Kauai is under an islandwide flash flood warning until 5:45 p.m. HST Saturday, October 31, with Kuhio Highway closed near Hanalei Bridge, the National Weather Service said. NWS extended the warning by three hours. Its scheduled end is 8:45 p.m. Pacific.

In its 2:19 p.m. HST statement, NWS Honolulu said rain was falling over Kauai's eastern slopes at 1 to 2 inches an hour, with additional showers moving in from the southwest. Rapid rises were observed in the Hanalei River and along the South Fork of the Wailua River.

The agency said flash flooding was ongoing or expected shortly, particularly near Hanalei Bridge and the mouth of the Wailua River. The warning covers the entire island, including small streams, roads, underpasses and other low-lying areas.

Hawaii News Now reported that the highway near Hanalei Bridge was closed due to floodwater as of 12:45 p.m. HST. The 2:19 p.m. HST NWS statement said the highway remained closed. Neither report establishes when the road will reopen.

Drivers should turn around at flooded roads. NWS also advises campers and hikers to avoid streams and creeks during the warning. Do not cross fast-moving or rising water on foot or in a vehicle.
