Nexus Mods is requiring authors to declare AI use when they upload a new mod, while giving existing files until January 2, 2027, to meet its new disclosure and permission requirements. The November 3 policy affects game files and the promotional material on a mod's page.
For PC players, the change should make it easier to see what an author used AI to produce. For creators, choosing an AI-assisted tag also brings a requirement to explain which tools contributed and what their output does in the finished mod.
The site is continuing to accept AI-generated mods. Its announcement instead sets out a disclosure system, permission controls and changes to how players find or filter content.
What applies now and what waits until January
The transition period began November 3. It covers the new detailed descriptions for AI-assisted work and the new permission tags for AI use and forks, meaning alternative versions of an existing mod. The site's existing copyright rules and basic AI disclosure obligations remain in force throughout.
| File or requirement | Timing |
|---|---|
| A new upload | Complete the updated disclosure and permission fields immediately |
| An existing mod's new detailed statement and permission tags | Bring the file into compliance by January 2, 2027 |
| Existing copyright and basic AI disclosure rules | Continue to apply during the transition |
Dismissing a reminder in an author's dashboard does not exempt the file. The detailed policy distinguishes that reminder from the obligation to update the mod itself.
Describe the AI contribution to the finished work

Nexus distinguishes work whose core content was generated by AI from human-led work that used AI in a supporting role. It also has an AI Media category for material outside the game files, such as promotional images, banners, videos and descriptions.
For AI-assisted mods, authors must identify the tools or models they used and explain which AI-produced files, assets or code remain in the final upload. A general statement that AI helped with the project leaves out the itemized explanation the policy requires.
Development records also matter. The site lists project histories and version-control records among the evidence of human-led work, and says an author's understanding of the code may be relevant in a moderation dispute. Authors must revise their public statement when an update adds new AI-assisted components or substantially changes existing ones.
Permission and credit are separate checks
The planned permission controls cover AI training and tool use as well as forks or parallel versions. Their default is Ask Me. Under the site's rules, that means obtaining the author's direct written permission before the covered reuse.
The policy also recognizes existing open licenses. It says platform defaults do not override valid copyleft licenses already attached to code or assets. An inactive author does not automatically turn a file into an unrestricted resource.
Derivative mods must credit the original creators and link to the source mod. Where the work builds on another derivative or incorporates several sources, the credit requirement extends through that chain. External assets need a working link to their original source page.
Players should expect a staged rollout
Nexus already had AI-generated and AI-assisted tags before this announcement. It now plans to make them more prominent and improve preference controls on game pages, the homepage and search. The company says those changes will arrive in stages, so the announcement is not confirmation that every new filter is available everywhere today.
Its rules also prohibit media that misrepresents what a mod provides. An AI-created picture presented as an actual in-game screenshot can therefore break the rules even when the author discloses AI use elsewhere.
After January 2, noncompliant existing mods will go to the Trust & Safety team for review. Authors will be notified and asked to correct missing information. Continued failure after that notification can lead to warnings, account restrictions or removal.
