One person was killed and eight others were wounded in a shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, after Saturday's Magic City Classic football game, police said.
Officers were called to the 400 block of Graymont Avenue around 7:50 p.m. October 31, according to WBRC's report on the police response.
At an early Sunday briefing, police said one injured person was in critical condition and seven were stable, ABC News reported. Officers recovered several firearms, and one person was taken to police headquarters for questioning. Detention for questioning does not establish that someone has been charged.
Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had left the stadium property before the shooting near vendors along Graymont Avenue, the Associated Press reported. The circumstances of the gunfire remained unclear in that account.
Police suspended tailgating Saturday night and told people to leave Legion Field property. WBRC reported that no officers or first responders were injured.
The game brings together Alabama State and Alabama A&M, two historically Black universities whose rivalry has been played for more than a century, AP reported.
Mayor Randall Woodfin said Saturday night that the community was "hurt, shaken and rightfully angry," in a statement carried by WBRC.
Police asked anyone with video of the shooting to share it with investigators. WBRC's report includes the department's request and a submission link.
