Six people were shot late Halloween night on East Main Street in Newark, Delaware, near the University of Delaware campus, police said. The shooting happened at about 11:13 p.m. Saturday on the south sidewalk of East Main Street, directly across from Choate Street, according to an update from the Newark Police Department early Sunday. All six victims were taken to local hospitals.
What police have said
Detectives are still working to determine the circumstances of the shooting, the department said. In its first statement, posted shortly after midnight, police said that based on the information available, "there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to public safety."
Police have not released the victims' names, ages or conditions, said whether any were students, or announced an arrest or a description of a suspect.
Main Street was closed for about five hours between South Chapel and Haines streets and has since reopened, according to the university.
How to share video or tips
Newark police are asking anyone with video or photos of the shooting to upload them through the evidence link in the department's update. Anyone with other information can contact Detective Paige Klein at 302-366-7100, extension 3480, or [email protected]. The department's tips page lists other ways to reach investigators, along with any reward information.
What the University of Delaware says

The university's police department helped with the emergency response and is working with Newark police, according to the university's campus alerts page, which it is using for updates.
In an email to students, faculty and staff Sunday morning, University of Delaware President Laura Carlson asked the campus to keep the victims in their thoughts and to look out for students and others who were on Main Street and saw the shooting. "We are all impacted," she wrote. She said police and first responders from around the county and the state arrived within minutes and gave life-saving care at the scene, and she asked the campus to rely on the alerts page rather than rumors.
